Preparing Your Pennsylvania Yard for the Spring and Summer Season
Spring is in the air, and you know what that means! It’s time to get your Pennsylvania yard ready for sun-kissed weather!
You don’t want to spend all your weekends mowing the lawn or weeding flower beds this season. We’ve compiled a list of things you should be doing now to prepare for the warmer days ahead. Get on top of it with these tips before it’s too hot out! Your yard will be picture-perfect for family time, BBQ’s and entertaining.
Tidy Up
First things first, you’ll want to assess the condition of your outdoor spaces. This will help you know how much effort it will take to get your yard under control.
Harsh winter weather in Pennsylvania brings dead leaves, broken branches, and sometimes even damage to fences, walkways, and plants.
Work your way from the front yard to the back, cleaning up as you go. Clear out any debris from last season so you can start fresh this spring. And be mindful of anything that needs repairing, replacing or replanting.
Tend Your Garden
Give your garden a facelift so its beauty can shine this spring! Get rid of dead plants and weed your garden beds. Put down a layer of mulch or compost to prepare it for new flowers and shrubs. This will add nutrients and moisture to the soil, while defending against future weeds.
Plant fresh flowers, shrubs, or trees in your yard for color and shade. If you have the space, adding a small vegetable garden or fruit trees will make a beautiful backyard that also produces food! These fruit trees grow well in our Pennsylvania climate.
Prep Your Patio
When you’re spending time outside, you’ll need somewhere to relax. Now’s the time to pull out your lawn furniture and patio decor.
Wash any fabric items, like cushion covers and pillows. Wipe down chairs, benches and tables. Clean the grill and any BBQ accessories. Sweep all concrete areas or use degreaser and a pressure washer for a really noticeable improvement!
Upgrade Your Yard
Make your yard even more inviting with some simple home improvements. Adding landscape lighting along your paths or uplights for your trees will set the mood in the evenings. String lights are affordable and easy to hang from a pergola or deck cover. And hanging flower pots will add a pop of color at eye-level.
If you’re feeling really motivated, take a weekend to upgrade your yard with a water feature, like a pond or a fountain. A DIY fire pit is also a great addition and simple to build, even if you have no experience! Or you can take the easy route and pick up a store-bought fire pit for instant enjoyment.
Last but not least, be sure to maintain your yard. Mow on a regular schedule and pull those weeds when they pop up. Regular care makes it easier to maintain, and keeps everything looking lovely!
