Beat the Heat: Smart Strategies for Improving Summer Energy Efficiency

Summer may bring higher temperatures, but it doesn't have to result in higher energy bills. You can use simple and smart strategies to keep your home cool without spending much money or harming the environment.

HVAC Maintenance

Here’s how to avoid a sky-high energy bill during the summer:

  • Change your system’s air filter at the beginning of each season.
  • If your home is less than one year old or you have multiple pets, change the filter more often to prevent the blower fan from working too hard.
  • Look for leaks and problems: Catching minor issues early can save you money on costly repairs in the long run.
  • Get a yearly professional checkup: Like a doctor’s visit, an annual inspection keeps your HVAC system healthy.

Temperature Control

Do you ever find yourself cranking up the AC in the morning, only to realize later that you’ve been cooling an empty house all day? The U.S. Department of Energy estimates programmable thermostats can save homeowners up to 10% annually on their heating and cooling costs! Plus, it’s a game-changer when you’re away on vacation and for other extended periods.

Here are some additional helpful tips:

  • Don’t fluctuate the temperature more than 3-5 degrees between settings. Like- if you usually chill to 75 when you’re home, don’t go beyond 78-80 when you’re not home
  • Avoid trying to cool your home more than 20 degrees lower than the outside temperature
  • In hotter months, keeping your home set to between 75 and 78 degrees is the most cost-efficient
  • Close blinds/curtains on hot, sunny days
  • Adjust supply dampers to provide more cool air to the upper levels of your home as cold air settles or falls toward the floor.

While energy-saving measures can benefit any home, newer homes often have a built-in advantage. Modern construction techniques, materials, and stricter building codes result in inherently more airtight homes that are better insulated than older counterparts. This investment will save you money on energy bills, reduce your carbon footprint, and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Investing in energy-efficient features will yield long-term benefits, lower utility bills, and enhanced comfort. With some planning and foresight, you can save money and embrace a more sustainable and financially savvy lifestyle all summer!
