A Smooth Transition: Essential Tips for Moving with Kids
Kids are resilient. But even for them, moving can be stressful and a challenge. But it doesn't have to be. It is possible to have a smooth transition.
Just follow these few essential tips to make that happen.
CommunicationTalk with them about the impending move, explaining why it is happening and the steps that are going to take place leading up to and including moving day. Allow them to ask as many questions as they want or need, answering each of them with care and respect.
FamiliarizationIf feasible, take them by the new home, visit the neighborhood and the surrounding area. This will help them see that it is not a scary, unknown place. This allows them to picture themselves in the space, beginning to make it familiar and known.
Follow RoutinesDuring the moving process, it will help to maintain familiar routines, as much as possible. This will provide them with a sense of security amongst the discord.
PackingLet them take ownership of their special belongings. Give them a suitcase or a box and allow them to fill them with their belongings. This will give them a sense of ownership and a role in the move.
UnpackingWhen you arrive at the new home allow your child(ren) to assist with the unpacking, starting with their bedroom and the special belongings that they packed. You can also let them help set up and stage the rest of them, as age appropriate. This is another way to give them a sense of ownership.
PatienceFor some kiddos, this is a bigger deal than others. Meet your child(ren) where they're at and offer them grace, patience and understanding during the transition period. It is normal for them to become anxious at times.
With communication and proper planning, you will find the transition to go smoother than expected. Just remember to follow routines and be patient as you all settle into the new environment.
