7 Easy Ways to Make Your Home More Efficient

Want to make your home more comfortable and save money at the same time? Making small, easy changes can help with energy savings that are well worth the time and effort.

Here are some easy tips for doing just that!

Caulk & Weather-stripping

Check your windows and doors for any gaps. This is where warm air will escape and cold air will find its way in. A quick caulk and some weather stripping around these gaps will help prevent heat loss.

Adjust the Thermostat

When leaving your home, adjust the thermostat up or down by just a few degrees. Turn it down in the winter and up in the summer. This can make a difference in the amount of energy your home uses.

Ceiling Fans

Running a ceiling fan is a small amount compared to the cost of using your central air or air conditioning units. For those warm days, use the ceiling fans to cool off your rooms, saving the A/C for the hotter, unbearable days.

Change Filters on Your HVAC Unit

Clean filters = Energy Efficiency. Clogged and dirty air filters cause your HVAC system to work harder. Changing your filters every 3-4 months will save you money on your energy bill.

Open and Close Window Treatments

When the sun is shining in, draw open your curtains and allow the sun to penetrate through the windows, warming up the room. Use them as a type of insulation during those times when the sun has gone down or hiding behind the clouds. This will aide in keeping the heat from escaping.

Turn Down The Water Thermostat

It is recommended to turn down the water thermostat to 55-60 degrees, allowing for comfortably hot water. This ensures you will not be wasting money on heating your water more than necessary. One step further, if you are going to be away for an extended period of time, turn the heater to the lowest setting, for even more savings.

LED Lights

Swap out your lightbulbs for an LED option. These bulbs use less energy than incandescent bulbs. Also, take note of the light bulb wattage you are using in each room. If you don't need or want a brightly lit room, use a lower-wattage LED bulb to save energy.

As you work on making your home more energy efficient, keep in mind that it's an ongoing process and that every change and adjustment helps you reach your goal of maximum energy efficiency.
